C1.3 – Body parts

Identify body parts, including genitalia (e.g., penis, testicles, vagina, vulva), using correct terminology

C1.4 – Senses and functions

Identify the five senses and describe how each functions (e.g., sight: the eyes give the brain information about the world to help us see colours, shapes, and movement; touch: receptors in the skin tell us how things feel – if they are hot, cold, wet, dry, hard, soft; hearing: the ears pick up vibrations and send messages to the brain to help us hear sounds that are loud or soft, high-or-low-pitched; smell and taste: the tongue is covered with thousands of taste buds and the nose has tiny hairs and nerves to send messages to the brain about how things taste and smell)

Mystery bag activity

  • Fill plastic bags with different textured materials, and then place plastic bags in brown paper lunch bags.
  • Have students feel materials and describe the texture.
  • Ideas include: cold cooked spaghetti, whipped cream, rocks, jello, popcorn, pudding, toothpaste, fur fabric, and ice cubes
  • As a culmination to a five senses unit, have the children make self portraits; then glue on wiggle eyes, cotton ball dipped in perfume (nose), jingle bells (ears), sand paper (hands) and licorice (mouth). Use this caption: "[Student name] Has Five Senses"

C2.5 – Hygienic procedures

Demonstrate an understanding of and apply proper hygienic procedures for protecting their own health and preventing the transmission of disease to others (e.g., washing hands with soap, using a tissue, sleeve sneezing, brushing and flossing teeth, not sharing hats or hairbrushes)

  • Anatomy Matching Game (SMART)
    This activity is a great way to review male and female reproductive systems. Participants can label the male and reproductive system diagrams. (SMART™ Notebook software required)
  • Puberty Changes Game (SMART) Step one of this activity will indicate which puberty changes happen to whom: boys, girls, or both. The second step categorizes the puberty changes into what type of changes they are: physical/ body, emotional/feeling, and social/relationship changes. (SMART™ Notebook software required.)
  • Step by Step Conception (SMART)
    Go through the process of conception step by step. Each step is placed in the correct part of the sequence. (SMART™ Notebook software required)
