Enforcement of Immunization of School Pupils Act in effect

Apr. 20, 2017

Brantford, ON – 240 students whose immunization records are out-of-date with the Brant County Health Unit have been suspended from school until their records can be updated. The suspension takes effect immediately (Thursday, April 20, 2017) and includes 173 elementary and 67 secondary school students.

“Immunizations protect children from many serious diseases that are easily spread in schools,” says Karen Boughner, Acting Director, Health Protection at the Health Unit. “Our goal is to have all students’ immunization information so we are prepared in case of an outbreak.”

On February 6, 2017, suspension letters were mailed to the homes of students born in 2000, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 who, according to Health Unit records, needed one or more immunizations in accordance with the Ontario's Immunization of School Pupils Act.

“The number of suspension letters was significantly lower than previous years, and we would like to thank everyone for this success,” says Boughner.

If a student has already received immunizations that haven’t been reported to the Health Unit, parents can report them through one of the following ways:
