Tuberculosis (TB) Skin Test

Where can I get a TB Skin Test?

The Brant County Health Unit is offering TB Skin Test Clinics, starting the week of August 29, 2022. One and two step TB skin tests are currently being offered. Please call 519-753-4937 ext. 490 to book an appointment. Please note, after receiving your TB skin test you will need to return to the health unit in 48 hours to have your test read by a nurse.

When booking a TB Skin Test appointment please let booking staff know if you have received a vaccine in the past month. If you have received a live vaccine recently, you must wait 30 days after vaccination prior to receiving a TB skin test. Examples of live vaccines include Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR), Varicella (chickenpox), Rotavirus and Yellow Fever.

Do I have to pay for a TB Skin Test?

The Brant County Health Unit provides free TB Skin Tests only for people who have been named as a contact with a person who has TB disease, or when requested by a physician for Immigration Medical Surveillance. Therefore, you may need to pay out of pocket for your TB Skin Test depending on the reason for testing. In some scenarios the TB Skin Test is covered under OHIP.

TB Skin Tests are covered under OHIP for:

  • People who are named as a contact of an active TB case
  • People who need a TB Skin Test for medical reasons
  • People who have recently immigrated from countries where TB is more common
  • People who are 65 years of age or younger and need to be admitted to a Long- Term Care Facility

OHIP does not cover the cost of TB Skin Tests that are needed for employment or volunteer purposes. The cost of a TB skin test at the Brant County Health Unit is $25 per test for work or volunteer opportunities and $15 per test for school purposes (placement, co-op, etc.).
