Dental Services operates the following programs:

1. School based programs

  • Dental Indices Survey – A quick survey that collects information about the health of the mouths of the children in Brantford and Brant County.
  • SURFS (Screening, Urgent Referral and Follow-up Service) – spots children with serious problems with their teeth, sends them for care at a dental office, and follows up on action taken
  • Health Information – school newsletter inserts, teacher support materials (Teaching Kits)

2. Access to dental care programs

  • CINOT (Children In Need Of Treatment)- helps to pay for the cost of fixing children’s teeth, when that care is needed right away by low-income families
  • Preventive services – At Brant County Health Unit, clinical preventive services (brushing, flossing, sealants) for selected children at high risk of dental decay
  • Screening and advice services – A very quick look at the teeth of children who have no other way to visit a dentist. Offered every week at Brant County Health Unit office, one a month at the Early Years Centre in Brantford, and as part of the school based screening program. All families who want help to pay for a visit to the dentist must have the children screened first.

3. For Health Care Providers

  • Case consultations (discussion between health professionals)
  • Videos, pamphlets and other health teaching material that health unit staff can borrow to use with their clients

4. For the Community

  • Wellness Works—newsletter articles, presentations (check under Workplace Heath)
  • Other community activities as staffing and budget allow.
