 Introduction

Infectious diseases are an important cause of both morbidity (illness) and death in the community. They represent constant new challenges to public health as new diseases emerge and other diseases develop resistance to traditional treatments.

The Brant County Public Health Unit works to reduce and eliminate
infectious diseases through a wide range of activities including:
  • Surveillance and follow-up of cases of reportable diseases
  • Monitoring and responding to outbreaks of infectious diseases in both the community and health care setting
  • Providing education about infectious disease prevention to health care professionals, hospital workers, long term care facilities, day care centres, schools and the community
  • Promoting and providing immunization to the community
